Original signed documents from the term of James Garfield as President of the United States, represent one of the most elusive and rare presidential documents. Why? Because Garfield was only in office for less than four months when he was assassinated. We are privileged to have recently acquired one of these fine document signed by President Garfield during his short term as President. It is a commission document appointing James "Commodore" Bull as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy, April 22nd, 1881. Coincidentally, Garfield was well a well known supporter of the Navy and had pledged to rebuild the Navy which had fallen into disrepair since the end of the Civil war.
