Marvelous signed letter from President Harry S. Truman on White House letterhead to Mrs. Harry H. Vaughan, the wife of Truman's military aide Harry Vaughan. Great historical content. Mr. Vaughan was the target of Joe McCarthy and his committee during President Truman's term in office. In front page news of the time, Truman stood up for Vaughan telling reporters that he would not bow to the pressure of McCarthy and his associates and would not fire Vaughan. Senator Joseph R. McCarthy, a member of the Senate subcommittee investigating the so-called "five percenter" allegations, said Truman’s attitude "will lead to unlimited graft and corruption in the government." The letter hand signed by Truman was both direct and bold, stating that the findings "verifies what I've said all along - there is nothing to it. The more we discuss it the longer it will stay alive . If there was anything to the situation I would have taken action a long time ago. Sincerely, Harry Truman. At the bottom of the letter the handwritten note states "This had to do with my testimony before the Hooey - Joe McCarthy!" Great piece of President Truman, Joe McCarthy and McCarthy's "witch-hunts history". Comes with our 100% guarantee of authenticity. Nicely matted and framed.
Historical Notes
In President Truman remarks during a Reserve Officers Association dinner that no "s.o.b." could force him to dismiss a member of his staff by making "some smart-aleck statement over the air." He was reacting to Drew Pearson’s criticism of Harry H. Vaughan, the Military Aide to the President, for accepting a medal from Argentine president Juan Peron.
