Historical Notes
The Democratic Party began from political factions that opposed Alexander Hamilton in the early 1790s. These groups were known as the Anti-Administration “Party” and the Anti-Federalists. In the 1790s, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison brought these groups into the Republican (or Democratic-Republican) Party.
