Very interesting letter produced and distributed by the White House under President Gerald Ford responding to citizens who expressed their support of Ford's decision to Pardon Richard Nixon after his resignation as President as a direct result of the Watergate scandal. Based on the outpouring of comments from citizens - both pro and con - the White House produced two similar but different letters that were mailed to people who wrote to President Ford after the pardon. Embossed presidential seal at the top. On White House letterhead dated October, 1974. Original This letter was mailed to those who wrote to the White House supporting the pardon. In the letter President Ford outlines his reasons for granting the pardon "Throughout this evaluation process, my main concern was to heal the wounds to the Nation. That was my top priority", wrote Ford. He went on to say that "I am grateful that you support my decision and appreciate your taking the time to let me know about it." As the President states in the first sentence, "While the heavy volume of mail on the pardon of former President Nixon does not allow me to respond personally as I would like...." So this is a form letter send on the Official White House letterhead with the embossed Presidential Seal, but the signature is of course printed.
Historical Notes
From the text: "This was not an easy decision to reach, as I am sure you are aware. Before making it, i undertook a thorough examination of the entire matter. This included my right to grant pardons under the constitution, the legal actions contemplated by the Special Prosecutor, the probably duration of the criminal proceedings and a number of other factors."
