Introduction/Activating Hook: Students will be asked, “What are the requirements needed to become a US President? What are the responsibilities of this office?

Step-by Step Procedures:

  1. Discussion of the activating hook followed by a class review of the US Presidential election process. Included in discussion are the responsibilities and requirements of the Presidency, the election process itself, what influences votes, and the stances of the two main Presidential candidates in the latest Presidential election. Discussion can be reinforced by handout or viewing of
  2. Class will review campaign speeches and advertisements from various US Presidential candidates throughout the years.
  3. Teacher will present his/her own speech detailing ideas for their own personal Presidential promises/campaign speech or advertisement.
  4. Based on what they know about the responsibilities of the President of the US, students will create their own 2.5 minute campaign speeches describing what they will do if elected to the Presidency.
  5. Students will present their speeches while standing behind a podium and dressed in business attire. The presentations will be recorded and played back in class.
  6. Students will be allowed to ask each speaker a maximum of five questions after each presentation.

Tailor/Differentiation:

ESOL students will work one-on-one with teacher as needed and be provided with cloze speech writing forms if necessary.

Ongoing Evaluation:

Teacher will monitor students throughout the class period(s). Student presentation will be assessed based on customized, public speaking rubric given to students before they write their speeches.

Closure/Summarizing:

Students will answer essential question during class discussion. Students will also present projects to class and have the opportunity to critique themselves and their peers during recording playback.
