1840s Nativist (Early Know-Nothing) Ribbon – ‘Beware of Foreign Influence,’ Philadelphia”. This scarce silk ribbon was produced by the Native American Republican Association of the 1st Ward, Moyamensing—an early Philadelphia-area chapter of the nativist “Native American” or Know-Nothing movement. Featuring the slogan “Beware of Foreign Influence,” it dates to the 1840s era when anti-immigrant political groups held major strength in the city. A classic example of early American political nativism and pre-Civil War campaign imagery. Beautiful imagery. Original, of course.

Details

The Native American, or American Republican, movement emerged in the 1840s amid rising anxiety over immigration and Catholic influence. These nativist organizations—precursors to the later Know-Nothing Party—advocated for the rights of native-born Protestants and promoted restrictions on foreign political power. Centered especially in Philadelphia, they organized ward-level associations, parades, and rallies using slogans such as “Beware of Foreign Influence.” Their activism peaked after the violent Nativist Riots of 1844 and eventually evolved into the national American Party of the mid-1850s. Collectors today recognize these early groups as part of the broader Know-Nothing political tradition.
