Very interesting and rare original Delegate badge credential from the 1844 Democratic National Convention that was held in Baltimore, Maryland, that nominated James Polk for President. It is a thin paper badge from the Massachusetts Delegation that is a printers proof. In 1844, printers produced multiple proofs to test design, layout, and colors before finalizing ribbons. Each proof was reviewed for accuracy, sometimes in different inks, and initialed by staff to mark approval or revision. This piece is one such early trial, capturing the printing process in progress. Few items exist from this early convention. It features a graphic of a native American with a bow and arrow in the center. An increasingly scarce item. One of our favorites. Original.

Very good. Printed on rag paper (pre-newsprint era). Red and Black printing is off-center which is part of the printing proof process. Some wear as to expected for an item over 150 years old. Faint pencil writing at the lower right but we can't read it.
