Walley as running to split the anti-Democratic vote and elect Democrat Erasmus D. Beach. It urges voters to support the Republican candidate Rockwell. The election is most notable for electing incumbent Governor Henry J. Gardner of the "Know Nothing" party, over the Republican, Democratic and White party candidates in Massachusetts. 32 pgs. The "Know Nothing" party was a politicay party and movement active in the mid-1850s and later knowas simply as the "American Party". It was often accused of being a secret society and xenophobic.
