U.S. House Roll Call Voting Record Book – Rep. Thor C. Tollefson Washington State – 83rd Congress (1953–1954)
Original U.S. Government Printing Office leather binder titled “Individual Voting Record by Roll Calls in the United States House of Representatives – 83rd Congress, 1953–1954.” The volume records every roll call vote and indicates the position of Congressman Thor C. Tollefson of Washington State (Yea, Nay, Present, or Not Voting).
Prepared under the direction of the Clerk of the House, the book served as an internal working reference for congressional staff and members tracking legislative votes. Bound in black leather with brass fasteners, the volume contains detailed vote listings from the first session of the 83rd Congress convened January 3, 1953.
Voting record compilations such as this were produced by the Clerk of the House to allow members and party leadership to quickly review how a representative voted on every recorded roll call. While standard reference tools within Congress, copies tied to a specific member—such as this record for Tollefson—seldom appear on the collector market and provide a unique documentary record of a legislator’s role in shaping national policy during the early Eisenhower era.
Thor C. Tollefson (1901–1982) served as a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Washington State from 1947 to 1965. During the 83rd Congress (1953–1955), when this volume was produced, Republicans controlled the House under Speaker Joseph W. Martin Jr., and the administration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower had just begun. The period was marked by Cold War tensions, debate over federal spending, military policy, and early civil rights legislation
