Abraham Lincoln 1860 Campaign Patriotic Cover – “The People’s Candidate” Old Abe.

Outstanding Abraham Lincoln campaign-era patriotic cover featuring an engraved portrait of a beardless Lincoln surrounded by American flags and patriotic ornamentation. A flowing banner boldly proclaims “The People’s Candidate for President Abraham Lincoln,” while the caption beneath reads “‘Old Abe’ the Man for the Times.”

Even more visually striking is the enormous USA across the upper portion of the envelope, printed in red, white and blue stars and stripes.

Published by Car Bell, Hartford, Connecticut, this is an exceptionally graphic Lincoln campaign cover whose imagery leaves absolutely no doubt as to its political purpose. The combination of Lincoln’s portrait, his name, presidential candidacy and spectacular patriotic lettering makes this considerably more desirable than a generic Civil War flag cover.

Unused and original.

From a huge collection of 1860s patriotic civil war covers in very fine condition that we recently acquired.

Details

Lincoln’s supporters successfully fashioned the relatively unknown Illinois Republican into “Old Abe,” a plainspoken candidate of the people. His 1860 victory triggered the secession crisis that culminated in the Civil War, making surviving Lincoln campaign envelopes important artifacts from the election that immediately preceded the nation’s greatest internal conflict.
