Another Brick For The Old Ladies Home Rebus Style Novelty Button. Rebus is a puzzle in which words are represented by combinations of pictures and individual letters. We have not include why or how this button was used but for some strange reason we kind of like it so it's been sitting on our desk for ages. Original button with Steiner Badge Co. advertising back paper is likely from the late 1800's or very early 1900's.
UPDATE: When we originally listed this button we had not seen it before so we searched for information and found an example that said the image was that of a coffin. That seemed to fit the slogan and design perfectly so it made total sense to us. However, after listing it on our website two collectors were kind enough to point out that the image is actually of a 'brick' not a coffin and was produced to support the building fund of the Alton Old Ladies' Home in Alton, Illinois. We stand corrected, an appreciate the insight.
The Steiner Badge Company, also known as the Steiner Engraving and Badge Co., operated in St. Louis, Missouri, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
