Original Civil War patriotic cover featuring a dramatic and symbolic anti-war / Union loyalty illustration captioned “As It Is” and “As It Will Be.”
The upper vignette depicts two opposing soldiers confronting one another beneath American flags, while the lower scene presents a touching allegorical image of a mother and child under divine protection with the phrase “God watches over them.” The contrast between the two scenes reflects the emotional and moral themes commonly used in Civil War patriotic stationery.
The artwork was produced by Perl & Jones of New York, a known Civil War-era publisher of patriotic envelopes and stationery. Covers featuring allegorical and emotionally charged imagery remain among the most historically compelling Civil War designs.
