Details

Published by Brown & Ryan of Philadelphia and copyrighted in 1861, this striking design depicts a female allegorical figure advancing beneath a large American flag. The image likely represents the "Spirit of the North" referenced in the accompanying verse, a symbolic embodiment of Union determination at the outset of the Civil War.

On the reverse flap it reads: Entered according to Act of Congress, 1861, by Brown & Ryan, in the Clerk's Office of the Southern District of New York."
