An Extraordinary Piece of Presidential and Numismatic History — Authentic 1923 U.S. Treasury Payroll Check Made Out to President Calvin Coolidge for His Official Salary

This remarkable artifact is not simply a signed Coolidge autograph — it is an actual U.S. Treasury payroll check issued to Calvin Coolidge during his presidency for his official annual salary of $6,250, drawn from the Miscellaneous Warrant Division of General Accounts.

On the front is the treasury imprimatur, date stamp of November 30, 1923, check number, and Coolidge’s salary amount. On the reverse, Coolidge personally endorsed the check after receipt — making this an extraordinarily unusual presidential financial document.

Details

During the early 20th century, the annual salary for the President of the United States was set at $12,000 (in 1923 Coolidge received a prorated amount of $6,250). Although presidential signatures on letters and documents are common in the autograph market, actual payroll instruments issued to the sitting president — with personal endorsement — are extremely rare survivals.

These Treasury payroll checks were accounting instruments rarely kept by the recipient, and even less frequently enter the collectibles market. This example — issued directly by the U.S. Treasury and endorsed by Coolidge — offers a unique window into the fiscal history of the U.S. presidency and constitutes a premier acquisition for serious presidential collectors.
