No it's not what you think. While George McGovern might have had some interesting and progressive ideas during the 1972 campaign, he wasn't appealing to a gay or alternative population. During the 1972 campaign the New York democratic committee produced buttons for each of the cities boroughs. One of those boroughs was the city of Queens - thus the button "Queens for McGovern". Interesting button that certainly draws attention. Original.

McGovern lost the election to the U.S. Senate in 1960 but was successful in his bid in 1962.
