Civil War Patriotic Cover – Excelsior – Dramatic Young Flag Bearer Engraving. Striking Civil War-era patriotic envelope featuring a finely detailed black engraving of a youthful figure standing upon a rocky ledge, holding a large flag inscribed "EXCELSIOR." With one arm raised toward the heavens, the figure presents a dramatic image of courage, ambition, and determination.
The mountainous landscape and carefully executed engraving make this a particularly appealing example of illustrated Civil War stationery. Unused, with light age toning and minor scattered spotting. Original.
Part of a huge collection of patriotic Civil War covers in very fine condition that we recently acquired.
"Excelsior," meaning "ever upward," became a familiar expression of aspiration and perseverance during the nineteenth century. The term gained additional popularity through Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1841 poem of the same name, which tells of a determined young man carrying a banner bearing the word. Its imagery was particularly well suited to the patriotic enthusiasm of the Civil War era.
