1997 Clinton Gore Rare "Mule" Inaugural Medal Unofficial Error Variety.  The front is the official Clinton Gore Second Inauguration design by Don Everhart II. The reverse features a completely different design by Jakowicz with a 3-D recessed image of the future and the text Building Bridges to the 21st century. Just 12 of these medals were originally minted but when it was discovered that the wording on the obverse and reverse were the same ("SECOND INAUGURATION JANUARY 20, 1997 on both sides). the Medallic Art Co  minted another 12 with the corrected wording that reads "WILLIAM JEFFERSON CLINTON - ALERT GORE, JR."  This is the original error version.  Highly sought after "mule" error variety with no number on the edge and with the Medallic Art Co. inscription. Medallic Art Company was also the medalist for the official medal.  Listed in the Dick Johnson Database PCA 84:283 [mule]. With box and wooden stand. Original.

From the Larry Miniati Collection.

Details

A "mule" is a term used by collectors to refer to a medal or coin that has a design on the obverse or reverse that is not normally seen on the piece. In this case, it is particulary interesting since the Medallic Art Company was the medalist for the official inaugural medal and the obverse has the design from that medal, but the reverse has a completely different design.
