Col. Ellsworth “Assassinated” Illustrated Mourning Card.

One-sided Civil War mourning-style card featuring a large illustrated portrait of Union hero Colonel Elmer E. Ellsworth within a black memorial border reading “Colonel Ellsworth – Assassinated – May 24, 1861.” Produced shortly after Ellsworth’s death, the piece reflects the enormous Northern reaction to one of the first widely publicized Union casualties of the Civil War.

Ellsworth, a close friend of Abraham Lincoln and commander of the famed New York Fire Zouaves, was killed while removing a Confederate flag from the Marshall House Inn in Alexandria, Virginia. His death instantly transformed him into a Union martyr and patriotic symbol.

An attractive and highly displayable Civil War patriotic item with bold graphic appeal. Original.
