During the Civil War, Confederate leaders hoped that Britain or France might recognize the Confederacy as an independent nation. Northern patriotic covers often mocked those efforts, and this design does exactly that by reducing the Confederate “commissioners” to comic, almost costume-like figures at foreign courts. It is a smart example of Civil War propaganda that blends humor, ridicule, and politics in a compact and collectible format.
