Dewey Defeats Truman Classic & Original Complete First Section Chicago Tribune Newspaper
We are fortunate to have discovered yet another original of this famous edition of the Chicago Daily Tribune of November 3, 1948. It is the complete, original and authentic newspaper. This is arguably the most famous and sought after newspaper of all time. When the decision to print this paper was made by the editors returns were coming in very slowly and time was running out before the deadline for the edition. Based on early voting returns, the Tribune staff, determined that Thomas Dewey had won the election and would become the next President of the United States. After the newspaper was delivered to the street, more returns came in and showed that Harry Truman would be the ultimate winner, and would indeed be re-elected as President of the United States.
The already delivered "error" newspapers were gathered for return by staff members who were sent out to pick them up the error newspapers from newsstands and homes in the Chicago area. It also has the paragraph of type in the upside down position as all original examples have, since the newspaper workers in their haste to get the edition to the newsstands made the error. Original editions of this newspaper are becoming increasingly scarce, especially complete examples like this one. Here is a description of the condition: This is the complete first section of the newspaper, while this one does not include the second and third sections it obviously includes the most important first section with the iconic headline the upside down type. Overall we would rate the condition as Very Good., with less less usual margin and center edge tears. There is a small area of missing paper at the right edge just below the upside down type, but it does not touch the type. The front cover is evenly toned with a darker color than the inside pages, and includes pencil notations at the top right corner. We are not sure what the notations refer to, but were possibly street address delivery notations. Since the notations are in pencil they can likely be erased but we prefer to always keep collectibles as found - but that is your choice. small areas of paper loss on the cover that are not instantly visible since the type from the inside page shows through. the horizontal center fold is in very good condition since the paper was obviously stored flat for most of its life.
The value of these historic newspapers is generally valued based on, completeness, overall appearance and authenticity. As is true with most vintage newspapers, some toning and edge tears are to be expected, especially from newspapers that are over 75 years old This is an excellent opportunity to acquire one of the most famous newspaper ever produced. S If you are searching for one of these rare newspapers this is your chance to to acquire this highly sought after newspaper at a very good price. It would look great in an office or library or is an exceptional gift item.
