Dewey Defeats Truman Classic & Original Chicago Tribune Newspaper
We are fortunate to have discovered yet another original of this famous edition of the Chicago Daily Tribune of November 3, 1948. It is the complete first section with the iconic Dewey Defeats Truman headline. This is the, original and authentic newspaper. This is arguably the most famous and sought after newspaper of all time. When the decision to print this paper was made, returns were coming in very slowly and time was running out before the deadline for the edition. Based on early voting returns, the Tribune staff, determined that Thomas Dewey had won the election and would become the next President of the United States. After the newspaper was delivered to the street, more returns came in and showed that Harry Truman would be the ultimate winner, and would indeed be re-elected as President of the United States.
The already delivered "error" newspapers were gathered for return by staff members who were sent out to pick them up the error newspapers from newsstands and homes in the Chicago area. It also has the paragraph of type in the upside down position as all original examples have, since the newspaper workers in their haste to get the edition to the newsstands made the error. Original editions of this newspaper are becoming increasingly scarce, especially complete examples like this one. Here is a description of the condition: This is the complete first section of the newspaper that contains the most important front page with the iconic headline "Dewey Defeats Truman".
Overall we would rate the condition as Good+. The front cover displays well, particularly when viewed as folded with with the headline at the top emphasized. There are areas of folding and paper loss at the bottom of the newspaper pages which are visible when the newspaper is viewed un-folded. Color and toning is consistent with that of newspapers like this that are over 75 years old and has typical and minor tearing at the edges and in the center of the horizontal fold. Also, this is one of the few editions of this classic newspaper that we have seen that includes the name of the newspaper subscriber at the top right corner. This edition was scheduled to be delivered to a seminary in Springfield, Illinois.
The value of these historic newspapers is generally valued based on, completeness, overall appearance and authenticity. As is true with most vintage newspapers, some toning and edge tears are to be expected, especially from newspapers that are over 75 years old This is an excellent opportunity to acquire one of the most famous newspaper ever produced. If you are searching for one of these rare newspapers for your own collection or as a gift to someone special, this is your chance to to acquire this highly sought after newspaper at a very good price. It would look great in an office or library or is an exceptional gift item.
As experts in Dewey Defeats Truman newspapers this edition comes with our 100% guarantee of authenticity.
Collectors prize Dewey Defeats Truman newspapers not only for their humor and irony, but also because they symbolize one of journalism’s most famous mistakes. The bold headline, printed before results were final, captures the unpredictability of history and the fallibility of even trusted institutions. These papers are among the most desirable and conversation-worthy artifacts of twentieth-century collecting.
