Complete first section
We are fortunate to have discovered another original and complete first section of the Dewey Defeats Truman newspaper. This famous edition of the Chicago Tribune of November 3, 1948 is the original, authentic and complete front section -including the iconic Dewey Defeats Truman headline. This is arguably the most famous and sought after newspaper of all time. Absolutely original.
When the decision to print this paper was made, returns were coming in very slowly and time was running out before the deadline for the edition. The Tribune staff, based on the early returns, decided Dewey would be the next President. After the newspaper was delivered to the street, more returns came in and showed that Truman would be the ultimate winner and be reelected as President. The already delivered "error" newspapers were gathered for return by staff members sent out to pick them up from newsstands and homes in the Chicago area. It also has the paragraph of type in the upside down position since the newspaper workers were obviously in a hurry to get the edition out to the newsstands.
Original editions of this newspaper, like this one, are becoming increasingly scarce. It is in weak condition but is a unique opportunity to acquire one of these scarce newspapers at a fraction of the cost of one in very good condition.
Of particular interest is that this City To Star Edition contains numerous headlines and articles that support the Chicago Tribune declaring a support for a Dewey victory. For instance it includes the following stories; "Victory for Dewey Seen as Assured" and "First Michigan Town to Report Goes for Dewey" and "Massachusetts Shows Gain in Dewey's Vote. He's Stronger Than He Ran in '44. It also has a different back page advertisement then many other editions that were printed that day.
Here is a description of the condition: This is an original newspaper,. It is the complete 30-page first section as originally issued. This is the two star "City Home edition". There is water staining and spotting throughout, especially at the bottom half of the front page. If you are going to frame the newspaper it will show best with the front page folded as shown in the photos that displays the iconic headline. There are edge tears, chipping, general age wear especially along the left edge, as well as a the overall orange tinge that is typical of many mid-1900s newspapers. The majority these newspapers that we have seen over the years the owners tended to save just the front page, or first four pages of the newspaper. In this case all 30 pages of the front section are here.
