Michael Dukakis's 1988 campaign focused on on his "Massachusetts Miracle" economic record and "competence." Despite an early 17-point lead, he lost to George H.W. Bush. His defeat is often attributed to a ridiculed tank photo op, an emotionless debate response regarding his wife, and effective Republican attack ads.
