1853 Rare Franklin Pierce Inauguration Ball Held at Tammany Hall Invitation. The Inaugural Ball in Washington D.C. was cancelled due to the death of Pierce's son just weeks for the inauguration and the illness of Vice President elect William King who was in Spanish Cuba suffering from tuberculosis. For those reasons, the only Inauguration Ball memorabilia that apparently exists are from satellite locations like this one, that was held at the Tammany Hall in Southbridge Massachusetts. on March 4, 1853 the day Pierce was inaugurated.

We only occasionally see items related to the inauguration of President Franklin Pierce. Interestingly, satellite location programs from early inaugurations tend to be rarer than programs from inaugural balls held in Washington, D.C. simply because the number of attendees at satellite events were fewer.  In this case the invitation says "The number of Tickets is limited to Two Hundred." Original.

Details

Franklin Pierce was inaugurated as the 14th President of the United States on March 4, 1853, in Washington, D.C. He delivered his address entirely from memory, emphasizing national unity and expansion. The ceremony was somber, as Pierce's young son had died in a train accident weeks earlier. He chose to affirm rather than swear the oath of office.
