GASP! Non-Smokers Have Rights Too – 1970s Anti-Smoking Button. Unusual 1970s-era button from the early nonsmokers' rights movement, boldly proclaiming “GASP – NON-SMOKERS HAVE RIGHTS TOO.”

GASP generally stood for Group Against Smoking Pollution, a grassroots movement that emerged in the early 1970s as Americans began challenging the once-common practice of smoking in offices, restaurants, airplanes and other public places. Local GASP organizations sprang up around the country, advocating for smoke-free areas and recognition of the rights of nonsmokers.

An interesting reminder of a time when asking someone not to smoke next to you could itself be considered controversial. Original.

Details

The first GASP organizations appeared during the early 1970s and became part of the growing campaign to restrict smoking in shared public spaces. Long before smoke-free restaurants and workplaces became commonplace, GASP activists helped transform secondhand smoke from a matter of personal preference into a public-health and nonsmokers' rights issue.
