George Washington with Flags & Artillery Patriotic Civil War Cover – "Great God—Our King". Unused patriotic Civil War cover featuring an oval portrait of George Washington surrounded by crossed American flags, cannon, stacked cannonballs and patriotic verse beginning "Long may our Land be bright..." A colorful Union patriotic design celebrating the nation's founding ideals. The phrase "Great God—our King" is intentionally ironic to modern ears. The accompanying verse is adapted from America (My Country, 'Tis of Thee), where "Great God, our King" refers to God—not to an earthly monarch.
Throughout the Civil War, printers frequently paired George Washington with patriotic poetry and military symbols to encourage loyalty to the Union. By invoking Washington's image, publishers reminded citizens that preserving the republic honored the sacrifices made during the American Revolution.
