George Washington remained one of the most powerful patriotic symbols of the Civil War. Both North and South claimed his legacy, but Union publishers frequently placed his portrait on patriotic envelopes to emphasize preservation of the nation he helped create. Simple portrait designs such as this reminded correspondents that the struggle was fought to defend the Union founded by Washington.
