Grover Cleveland, before his presidency, had a notable legal career. Born in 1837, he moved to Buffalo, New York, in 1854, where he clerked for a law firm while studying law. Admitted to the bar in 1859, Cleveland became known for his diligent work ethic and integrity. He served as assistant district attorney of Erie County from 1863 to 1865, and later as sheriff from 1871 to 1873. Returning to private practice, Cleveland's reputation for honesty and efficiency grew, leading to his election as mayor of Buffalo in 1881, and subsequently, governor of New York in 1882.
