Great vintage California political collectibles from the 1950 campaign of Helen Gahagan Douglas for United States Senator. These "ad mat" was used in the printing process to create a printing plate for either ads to appear in newspapers or campaign materials. Sometimes called a stereotype matrix or wood at mat and are difficult to read since they were not the final product, just one of the steps in the printing process. If you're looking for an unusual California political item this is it! Two different advertisements promoting Senator Douglas who ran against Richard Nixon in a nasty race that had Nixon accusing Douglas of being a communist.

Details
Helen Gahagan Douglas was only the third woman and first Democratic woman elected to Congress from California; her election made California one of the first two states to elect female members to the House from both parties.
