2006 Hugo Chavez - “ELECCIÓN PRESIDENCIAL 2006” 11” x 16½” full color ballot printed on bright white coated glossy paper / picturing 86 candidates/parties, most of which are picturing Hugo Chavez, a candidate for re-election as Venezuela’s president, or Manuel Rosales, his principle opponent / with a superimposed “NO VALIDA” running diagonally (and inconspicuously) over the whole ballot, this one was one of many posted outside and displayed inside polling place as samples to help voters familiarize themselves with the many parties and candidates / colorful and fascinating, suitable for framing, and a fine memento of the presidential career of a controversial leader.
From the collection of Judge Charles B. Schudson who was on one of seven teams of International Election observers (along with teams from the OAS, Carter Center, NAACP, and others); ours consisted of judges from New York and Wisconsin.
During his terms in office Chavez increased ties with Fidel Castro's Cuban government exchanging oil for medics and educators.
