Rare Satirical Civil War Cover – Jefferson Davis Driven by the Devil – "Buer" Political Cartoon. From a large collection of Civil War patriotic covers we recently acquired.
The inscription "BUER." almost certainly refers to Buer, one of the spirits or demons listed in medieval demonology, especially the Lesser Key of Solomon. During the Victorian era, cartoonists occasionally borrowed names from demonological texts to add another layer of symbolism. Whether every contemporary viewer would have recognized the reference is debatable, but educated readers and illustrators often did. Pairing Buer with J.D. (Jefferson Davis) created an unmistakably anti-Confederate image, suggesting Davis was in league with infernal forces. It's not a common motif, making this a particularly unusual design.
