Jefferson Davis “J.D.’s Body Guard” Civil War Satirical Cover – Confederate Caricature.
A wonderfully sarcastic Civil War patriotic envelope featuring a caricature captioned “J. D.’s Body Guard,” an unmistakable reference to Confederate President Jefferson Davis. The illustration depicts a rather less-than-formidable armed protector, deliberately ridiculing Davis and the Confederate cause.
Printed on distinctive yellow paper, the cover is an excellent example of the often surprisingly sharp political humor appearing on Union patriotic envelopes during the Civil War.

Jefferson Davis was a favorite target of Northern cartoonists, who portrayed the Confederate president as everything from a would-be dictator to a coward and fugitive. Patriotic envelope publishers enthusiastically adopted such caricatures, allowing ordinary Northerners to send political ridicule of Confederate leaders through the U.S. mails.
