A superb original black-and-white photograph of President John F. Kennedy at Detroit City Airport on October 6, 1962, photographed by Irv King. Kennedy is captured smiling and reaching toward an enthusiastic crowd, whose outstretched hands press against the temporary fence, while a bank of press photographers records the scene from an elevated platform.
Stamped on the reverse UAW Solidarity Publications Department and accompanied by its caption information identifying the scene: “Profile, smiling reaching out to shake hands at Detroit City Airport.”
Kennedy was in Michigan during an intensive 1962 midterm campaign trip. His official presidential diary records his arrival at Detroit City Airport at 11:45 a.m. on October 6, after which he departed by helicopter for Flint and continued campaigning through Michigan.
The photograph is particularly effective in capturing Kennedy's extraordinary ability to connect with crowds. The sea of reaching hands, spectators leaning against the barrier, Secret Service personnel and photographers crowded around the President make this much more than a routine presidential appearance photograph. October 6, 1962 proved to be John F. Kennedy's final visit to Detroit. Michigan Governor John Swainson later recalled that a marker was placed at the Sheraton Cadillac Hotel commemorating the fact. Kennedy continued that day to Flint and Muskegon, campaigning for Democratic candidates ahead of the November midterm elections
