Replica of the classic coconut husk used by John F. Kennedy to lead rescuers to where he and his crew were stranded on Nauru Island after his boat, PT-109, was struck by the Japanese destroyer Amagiri on August 2, 1943. After JFK's PT-109 was sunk after a collision with a Japanese ship during World War II JFK and is crew swam for miles to reach land and after several days JFK decided to carve a message in a coconut that read "NAURO ISL…COMMANDER…NATIVE KNOWS POS'IT…HE CAN PILOT…11 ALIVE…NEED SMALL BOAT…KENNEDY" he then handed it to a native and said "Rendova, Rendova!". The original coconut husk was returned to John F Kennedy and remained on his desk for the duration of his presidency. This replica was sold by the John F Kennedy Library & Museum and would be a great addition to your Kennedy collection.
Kennedy realized it was the massive Japanese destroyer Amagiri traveling at 40 knots. The massive destroyer slammed broadside into the smaller wooden boat cutting the PT 109 in two in ten seconds. Apparently, the Japanese destroyer didn’t even realize that they had struck an enemy vessel and kept going.
