Civil War Patriotic Cover – Liberty and Union Now and Forever – Crossed Flag. Colorful Civil War-era patriotic envelope featuring two crossed American flags printed in red and blue. Beneath the flags appears one of the most celebrated declarations of American national unity:
"LIBERTY AND UNION, NOW AND FOREVER, ONE AND INSEPARABLE."
An appealing example of Union patriotic stationery combining a classic American flag design with an enduring political slogan. Unused, with light age toning. The envelope also displays a faint additional design of a large American eagle printed in the background, which is unusual for printing during that era. Original.
The famous declaration originated with Massachusetts Senator Daniel Webster during his celebrated 1830 reply to Senator Robert Y. Hayne. Webster's defense of the Union became especially meaningful during the Civil War, when his words were widely reproduced on patriotic envelopes, banners, and other expressions of national loyalty.
