Civil War Patriotic Cover – Zouave Soldier “Washington Via Baltimore” – Color. Colorful original Civil War patriotic envelope featuring a Union soldier triumphantly raising the American flag above a cannon and battlefield equipment.
Across the top appears the stirring inscription:
“LIBERTY AND UNION. NOW AND FOREVER. ONE AND INSEPARABLE.”
The phrase was adapted from Daniel Webster's famous 1830 defense of the Union and became especially meaningful three decades later as the nation confronted secession and Civil War.
Printed in patriotic red and blue, the illustration combines several classic symbols of Union wartime imagery—the American flag, armed soldier and artillery—into a particularly attractive unused cover.
From a large collection of patriotic civil war covers in very fine condition that we have acquired.
Daniel Webster originally declared “Liberty and Union, now and forever, one and inseparable” during his celebrated 1830 Senate reply to Robert Hayne. By the Civil War era, the phrase had become an especially appropriate expression of Unionist sentiment, appearing in political rhetoric, newspapers and patriotic material.
