Louis T. Wigfall Caricature Patriotic Civil War Cover – "Promised Descent on Washington".
Unused satirical Civil War patriotic cover caricaturing Confederate Senator Louis T. Wigfall with the caption, "WIGFALL on his promised descent on Washington." An uncommon political cartoon mocking Confederate predictions that Richmond's forces would swiftly capture the Union capital. . Today we know there was no triumphant Confederate march into Washington. But in the spring and summer of 1861, people genuinely debated whether such an invasion might happen. The caricature shows Wigfall literally tumbling ("wigfall") rather than descending victoriously—a visual pun that Northern audiences would have immediately understood.Unused and original.

Louis Trezevant Wigfall of Texas was one of the Confederacy's most outspoken "Fire-Eaters" and among the South's fiercest advocates for secession. Early in the Civil War, Northern cartoonists delighted in ridiculing Confederate leaders whose boasts of quickly capturing Washington proved empty. This cover satirizes those exaggerated Confederate claims through a humorous caricature.
