During the Civil War, the image became a fitting metaphor for a nation enduring tremendous destruction while looking toward eventual restoration. Although resembling an American eagle, the figure clearly draws upon the ancient phoenix tradition, making this one of the more symbolic patriotic envelopes of the period.
