Original Civil War patriotic cover featuring a humorous caricature of “Capt. Baker” of the Confederate privateer Savannah. The figure is shown wide-eyed and startled, paired with the caption:
“Capt. Baker, of the pirate ‘Savannah,’ is astounded to find that the vessel he is trying to overhaul is the man-of-war brig Perry.”
This design pokes fun at Confederate privateering efforts early in the war, portraying their commanders as outmatched and unprepared when encountering Union naval القوة. The exaggerated expression and oversized head add to the comic effect, a common stylistic choice in Northern propaganda envelopes.
Printed in black on a toned cover with ample open space, making the illustration stand out nicely.
Unused and original.
From a large collection of very fine Civil War covers and memorabilia we recently acquired.
The Confederate privateer Savannah was one of the first Southern vessels authorized to attack Union shipping in 1861.
