1960s President Lyndon Johnson Personally Owned Stetson Hat

A remarkable presidential artifact. This is ahat that was actually owned and worn by President Lyndon Johnson. During the President’s visit to Nashville Tennessee in June of 1968, he left his hat in a Tennessee Trooper’s card and forgot it. The hat is inscribed “Made by Stetson Especially for Lyndon B. Johnson”. It also has a satin liner which has the outline of the state of Texas and Johnson City LBJ Ranch inscribed on it with a lasso rope border and a star in the middle”.

In addition to both inscriptions, the hat also includes eighteen pieces of provenance including a two-page handwritten letter from its most recent owner that includes the history of the hat, as well as communications with the LBJ Presidential Library and Museum that kindly provided information confirming the date of LBJ’s visit to Nashville and also provided 14 pages of LBJ’s schedule for that day.

Here's an excerpt from the provenance “…During a visit President Johnson made to Nashville in June of 1968 he had left his hat in a Tennessee State Trooper’s car and forgot about it. Letter, the Trooper found the hat and informed his chief about it. The Chief contacted a White House staff person about the hat. The contact told the Chief that President Johnson said the Trooper could keep the hat as a souvenir because he has “extra” hats….”

A unique opportunity to acquire a personally owned, inscribed and worn by a United States President.
