William Howard Taft Signed White House Inscription – June 24, 1909. An attractive, personally inscribed autograph of President William Howard Taft, signed during his first year in the White House.
Written on an unusual rectangular sheet of cream-colored paper measuring 5¼" x 2¼", with "THE WHITE HOUSE – WASHINGTON" embossed in silver along the upper edge.
The inscription reads, in part, "To my friend Charles [surname undetermined but possibly Holden]," followed by Taft's best wishes and his signature, dated June 24, 1909, just three and a half months after his inauguration as the 27th President of the United States.
Particularly appealing is Taft's personal salutation, "my friend," giving the inscription a more intimate character than a conventional presidential autograph. Although the recipient has not been conclusively identified, the wording suggests a personal connection rather than a simple autograph request.
The paper is heavier than ordinary writing paper but lighter than conventional cardstock. The reverse is blank, with some evidence of previous mounting. An attractive example of a presidential-period autograph, enhanced by its distinctive silver-embossed White House heading and precisely dated inscription. Original.
Comes with our 100% money-back guarantee of authenticity.
William Howard Taft had been President for just 112 days when he signed this inscription on June 24, 1909. A former Secretary of War under Theodore Roosevelt, Taft would serve one term as President before becoming Chief Justice of the United States in 1921—the only individual in American history to hold both offices.
