Interesting handwritten invitation to the 1857 inaugural ball of President James Buchanan. The invitation request. "You and Sandy are very respectfully requested to attend an Inauguration ball on the evening of the 4th of March." We assume this is for an official inaugural ball, but we are not sure. The invitation is dated February 24th 1857. Original.
Details
The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice Roger Taney on the East Portico of the Capitol. The inaugural ball was held that evening for 6,000 celebrants in a specially built hall on Judiciary Square.
