Federal Cannon & American Flag Patriotic Civil War Cover – "Put Down This Infamous Rebellion" Patriotic Civil War cover depicting a field cannon flying a large American flag above the bold caption, "The Federal Government must spare no expense to put down this infamous rebellion." An excellent example of early Union wartime propaganda. Expresses a policy statement rather than merely displaying patriotic imagery. It captures the mood of the North in 1861 remarkably well. Unused and original.

Early Union patriotic covers often carried uncompromising messages calling for decisive military action against the Confederacy. Such envelopes reflected Northern determination that preserving the Union justified whatever military resources were necessary to suppress the rebellion.
