Camp David JFK Military Staff Christmas Dinner November 1963 Menu. Held just six days after the assassination of President John F Kennedy, the dinner was no doubt meant to thank the military staff for their service, while it obviously was also a somewhat somber occasion. It has been a Thanksgiving tradition to hold this event to honor the military staff who protect Camp David.  This year's event was led by Lieutenant Commander Charles M Howe, CEC, USN Officer in Charge.   Because Camp David was occupied only by an essential skeleton crew for this disrupted holiday, the number of these programs printed was minuscule compared to standard White House or military base holiday events. Very few survived. 4 pages. Original.

Details

This program is not just a piece of military ephemera; it is a direct artifact from one of the darkest weeks in American history. Held exactly six days after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, this Thanksgiving dinner was attended strictly by the skeleton crew of soldiers and sailors who remained on duty to guard and maintain the compound during a time of unprecedented national crisis. Instead of hosting the bustling holiday of a First Family, the retreat was silent. Newly sworn-in President Lyndon B. Johnson spent the holiday mourning at his ranch in Texas, leaving the Camp David military detachment to observe a very somber occasion.
