Colorful Civil War patriotic cover depicting a Northern pine tree bending against a Southern palm, accompanied by lines from Oliver Wendell Holmes: “Enough of speech; the trumpet rings!... God help them if the tempest swings / The Pine against the Palm!” A particularly evocative Union design symbolizing the sectional conflict between North and South. Unused and original.
From the enormous collection of patriotic Civil War covers we recently acquired.
The lines come from Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.'s Civil War poem “A Voice of the Loyal North,” in which the Northern pine and Southern palm serve as geographic symbols for the opposing sections.
