Civil War Patriotic Cover – The Union It Must Be Preserved – Colorful Flag. Civil War-era patriotic envelope featuring a large, flowing American flag printed in vivid red and blue. Incorporated directly into the flag's design is the stirring declaration:
"THE UNION, It must be preserved."
The combination of bold lettering and carefully engraved flag imagery creates a particularly attractive example of patriotic stationery produced during one of the most consequential periods in American history.
Unused, with light age toning and minor handling wear.
Original.
From a collection of original Civil War patriotic covers we recently acquired.
"The Union, it must be preserved" is closely associated with President Andrew Jackson, who declared "Our Federal Union: It must be preserved" during an 1830 Jefferson birthday dinner. The sentiment became particularly relevant during the secession crisis and Civil War, when Union supporters invoked Jackson's words to emphasize the importance of national unity.
