2001 Vicente Fox Mexico State Visit White House Arrival Ceremony Program – George W. Bush. Official program for the State Arrival Ceremony honoring His Excellency Vicente Fox Quesada, President of the United Mexican States, and Mrs. Fox, at the White House on September 5, 2001.
President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush welcomed President and Mrs. Fox at a formal ceremony on the South Lawn featuring military honors, the national anthems of Mexico and the United States, and remarks by Presidents Bush and Fox.
The occasion marked the first State Visit of the George W. Bush administration and was followed later that evening by Bush's first White House State Dinner. The visit emphasized the administration's efforts to strengthen U.S.-Mexican relations, with discussions covering trade, immigration, border affairs, energy, law enforcement and other bilateral issues.
An especially interesting piece of George W. Bush presidential and U.S.-Mexico diplomatic history, the ceremony took place September 5, 2001—just six days before the September 11 terrorist attacks dramatically changed the focus of the Bush presidency and American foreign policy.
The timing gives surviving material from the visit additional historical interest: the arrival ceremony occurred on September 5, only six days before the September 11 attacks transformed the priorities and public character of the Bush presidency.
