Details

During the Civil War, Northern artists and printers often depicted the U.S. flag with a reduced star count to symbolically represent the states that had seceded. An 11-star flag typically alludes to the first wave of secession in 1860–61 (South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina).
