1973 Rare Nixon Holds Largest Party Ever Held at The White House Honoring POWs Star-studded Program. On February 12, 1973 President Richard Nixon held a party at The White House in honor of recently returned POW's, many of whom were prisoners in the "Hanoi Hilton". It was the largest party said to have ever been held at The White House and the celebrity list of entertainers certainly supports it. The entertainment included, Bob Hope, John Wayne, Vic Damone, Phyllis Diller, Joey Heatherton, Jimmy Steward, Sammy Davis Jr, Irving Berlin, Edger Bergen and many others. The party also included the Air Force Band, Navy String Quartet, Marine Orchestra, Army Chorus and more. guess list This is the official and rarely seen fold-out program from the event.
From one of Bob Hope's comments on the Vietnam War:
I just hated to get involved in politics. It used to be considered corny to be too patriotic . . . like you are almost commercializing on patriotism. There was that danger. I stayed away from it until this past year, when I figured that it had to be pretty important. I got a very negative feeling that the country was getting very little support from the news media. And I felt that they were being unfair.—Bob Hope, 1970
