Original White House State Dinner menu from May 17, 1965, honoring South Korean President Park Chung Hee and First Lady Yuk Young-soo during their state visit to the United States.
President Lyndon B. Johnson had formally welcomed President Park to the White House earlier that day with full military honors. That evening, President and Mrs. Johnson hosted the Parks at a dinner in the State Dining Room, where the two presidents exchanged toasts celebrating the longstanding alliance between the United States and South Korea.
The elegant menu features the raised embossed Seal of the President of the United States in gold at the top, with traditional gilt edging. The dinner included Cold Baby Lobster White House, Filet of Beef California, Potatoes Empire, Bibb Salad, Gourmandise Cheese and Meringue Park, accompanied by California wines.
An attractive and particularly well-documented piece of Lyndon B. Johnson White House and presidential state-dinner memorabilia, directly associated with an important Cold War-era state visit.
President Park's May 1965 visit came at an important point in U.S.–South Korean relations. During their meetings, Johnson and Park discussed American military support for South Korea, Korean-Japanese relations and other issues affecting security in Asia.
